Pitch:Africa. A Water Harvesting Initiative

The architects Jane Harrisson and David Turnbull, of New Jersey’s Atopia Research Inc., have found a new solution to Africa’s acute water shortage that also capitalizes on the continent’s latest sporting craze. Two years in the making, Pitch:Africa is a low-cost football (soccer to Americans) stadium that doubles as a rainwater harvesting and distribution system.  A cheery blue, semi-permeable polymer playing field allows rainwater to seep through and pool in cisterns. Considering that parts of Africa receive between three and six feet of rain in one season, this can add up to over a million liters of water a year.
