Sponsorship and the World Cup

Jim O'Toole has a really interesting post on his blog, reprinting verbatim the sponsorship "acknowledgements" from the 1966 World Cup in London.

Typewriters and hotel rooms- big money sponsors for what at the time was still the first or second biggest international sporting event of the quadrennial; I guess just no companies had noticed the incredible opportunity to align their brands with such a prestigious event!

Fast forward a few decades and you'll find this illustrious group of brand advertisers who now get it!
